CUMBERLAND City Council has successfully completed a series of major infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving roads, drainage, and essential public services in Merrylands.
The project included major upgrades to Merrylands Road, between Treves Street and Pitt Street, Addlestone Road, between Merrylands Road and Newman Street, CBD Main Lane, Dressler Court, McLeod Road and Neil Street, with hundreds of workers dedicated to these important improvements.
Spanning five years of planning and construction, Council has worked tirelessly to ensure these upgrades greatly enhance connectivity, reduce flooding risks and strengthen utilities to support a safer and more sustainable community.
Cumberland Mayor Ola Hamed said this project involved extensive road reconstruction with new kerbs, gutters, and stormwater drainage systems to enhance stability and flood prevention in Merrylands.
“Investing in infrastructure is key to working towards our housing targets and ensuring sustainable growth for our community. By enhancing roads, facilities and essential services, we are not only supporting new housing developments but also improving the quality of life for current and future residents. Our commitment to smart, strategic infrastructure has unlocked opportunities, created jobs, and paved the way for a more connected and welcoming Cumberland,” said Mayor Hamed.
Significant stormwater infrastructure was installed, featuring new pipelines designed to enhance water flow management and boost resilience against extreme weather events. Sewer and water supply networks were also upgraded, providing residents and businesses with a more reliable and efficient system.
One of the key benefits of these upgrades was the opening of Merrylands Civic Square in August 2023. This vital gathering space for residents and visitors to Cumberland was made possible through these essential infrastructure improvements.
In addition, electrical infrastructure was modernised, with new power cabling and an upgraded substation to support future growth and demand. Improvements to street lighting and landscaping have also contributed to a more aesthetically pleasing and well-lit urban environment.
Council extends its appreciation to residents and business owners for their patience and support throughout the completion of this transformative project.
